For those of my friends and followers who have been wondering what holotropic breathwork “looks like” here is a very rare clip…. Rare, because Stanislav Grof, its originator, has refused to allow the actual goings on of such workshops to be video recorded for media use. These experiences are too easily misunderstood and mislabeled, especially taken out of context. To my knowledge, he was unwilling to let the workshops be filmed unless the reporters themselves went through the experience. Perhaps this is one such. It occurred in the Eighties, and you will see a very young-looking Stanislav Grof facilitating here.
This is in German, so I can’t know what the commentary is saying. But this is most definitely what it looks like…. this is what i have been doing with my clients for years… this is what i have had years of experiencing with …this modality….
Simply describing what we do, no one really gets a good idea of what it’s like, for it is not like anything they know or have heard about….

Of course, this says nothing about what the actual experience is like, actually feels like …. nor can it convey the profound transformations that go on inside one, or the depth and meaningfulness of the experience to one’s life….

A good friend asked me, today:
“I’m a little confused and no one close to homes seems to understand my take on this … I would appreciate yours.
“I have come across ideas that when we die, pass over, death, whatever one would call it, that we are met by false light and guides, etc, and tricked into being reincarnated back to earth … we keep recycling to continue the slavery as energy, etc.
My response:
first, don’t believe that stuff….
i know that of which i speak….. plus, many others have been where i’ve been and will tell you the same thing…. not to mention, the spiritual literature throughout the ages….
second, it is common as hell for folks to project their horrors onto the unknown … it is the most common thing in the world…
indeed, if there is one thing i want to share in my writing it is that i’ve found out that those negative, often horrific, views of life and the afterlife are not true in reality … indeed, they are rooted in traumatic events that we all experienced in the womb and at birth….
they are common fears, but they are not true in reality ….
third, i, myself, and others like me have found that those kinds of views go away as growth continues … the farther along one is, the more it is that Reality is seen as perfect and wonderful….
lastly, to get an idea of the way stuff like you mention happens, just take what you said and take away the idea that someone, some evil or dark entity, is doing that …. well, then it says nothing more than that some of us reincarnate and some of us don’t….
what is left out is that whatever happens to us is meant to happen to us…. and it is not like there is even an Other making these decisions … it is our higher self (or selves) and ultimately it is God…
my books, Experience Is Divinity and Funny God, and especially Falls from Grace, tell how and why that stuff happens … that is, why we have those horrific thoughts …. and what is actually true and real….
i recommend them to give you peace of mind… it is the peace of mind that i have that i wish to share, if at all possible, through my writing. though personal growth is the only corrective in the long run, my works can help to the extent that one can be helped by having a different conceptualization, a different map of reality ….
some people have told me they are helped in exactly that way … they feel more hopeful and less fearful and more optimistic when viewing reality through the lenses i provide … which explain everything … all the important things … but show how they are part of a divine plan, one which we can all surrender to and take comfort in….

it’s true that when we realize our fundamental reality as Divinity … fully … we cast off the body and the state of physical reality as being essentially unreal and inconsequential….
however, till that ultimate overstanding … in the meantime … and we, as God, know this beforehand, before incarnating in physical reality … being in the body is fun!! or at least more interesting than spirit by itself….
so, there is a damn good reason for duality … a damn good reason for God forgetting Himself….
you might say that we are video games for God, who has disintegrated Herself into many, in a process of forgetting … just for the fun of it….
another way of saying it is that we are God, who is high, and is having a “night out on the town” … for that you can read, who is “tripping out in the Universe” for the fun or “glory” of it … making it all more by adding it being interesting to what is already All That Is
yes, you heard me. we are drunken gods…. we are God when he’s trippin.
knowing this purpose for physical reality … at this time in this story of Earth … well,

Egotistical and arrogant, patriarchal “heroes” deem they know better than anyone what is right and what is wrong — the Manichean separation of the world into absolutes of good and evil, you see. So they see no problem in straying over lines to get what they want. We see that element in virtually all tales of patriarchal heroes. It is so much a part of our thinking we fail to notice any problem when the tough guy police officer on the silver screen beats a confession out of the supposed bad guy or gets him to offer up the location of his buddies, the bomb, the body, or the loot by using what amounts to torture. The cops can blow things up, crash cars, kill people in crossfires, and more, because it is all in the service of “the good,” we are led to believe. We see that plot portrayed thousands of times over the course of our lives and never question it. In the same way, we turn our heads at Abu Ghraib.
Guantanamo is justified because we have a War on Terror, and patriarchal heroes, followers of the Perseus way, are especially gifted in the knowledge of what is terror — that the suffering they perpetrate in the world, through their wars and torture, are not terror but that the enemy’s actions are. This is no different from the cavalry knowing damn well sure that the indians are savage and so having no problem performing a genocide of them. Similarly, in full knowledge of the supposed rightness of his actions, Perseus is able to pressure and trick old and feeble women to do his bidding, with no sense of conscience.

“We call it “growing up” to be more insensitive, less spontaneous … to be impassionate, and morosely and meekly obedient. Our educators exhort us to deny emotions; our doctors provide pills to suppress them; and our therapists counsel their clients, helping them to be less alive. Like suburbanites paving over everything with asphalt and with manicured lawns in which any weed has been assassinated out of existence, we are terrified of anything unpredictable in the Divine, anything emotional. We want to control Divinity.
“Yet, this kind of going to the opposite extreme of emotion … worshiping nothingness, emotionlessness … does not give us a picture of Reality. “Why We Think Less Is More: There is a good reason why we make the mistake of confusing unfeelingness and a vapid personality and life experience with a greater and more Divine one. We are so traumatized by things that have been done to us in early life … maybe we had an angry daddy, a cruel mommy … that we get comfort only in imagining a Divine with no emotional qualities. We would rather cuddle with a statue, cozy up to a piece of granite, or be enamored of an empty concept or an ambiguous image or symbol than expose ourselves to what we feel to be the only alternative. That is, that Divinity might come crashing down on us like a thunderbolt … something perhaps our parents did. Because life was threatening to us, once, we seek to create a Divinity, thus, a Reality, that will not be, cannot be.

Divinity is not sensual because it is lacking in sensuality but because it is beyond sensuality, something greater than the experience of mere perception of things, which we call sensing things. Yet we try to approach It by denying our senses, not expanding them. Thus we kill the God in us, thinking we are becoming more God-full that way.”
